IIM-A mid-career course: jobs dry up

More than two months after their convocation on March 28, five of the 77 students attending one of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad's (IIM ? A) most prestigious courses have yet to find a job. In past years since the course - the Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives - was introduced in 2006, students who took it were all snapped up by top corporates even before their convocation.

With the economic slowdown, this year, however, the placement process has been stretching on and on. The one year course, started in response to repeated industry demands and currently costing Rs 14 lakh, equips mid career professionals for higher responsibilities.

Those taking it are typically recruited as vice presidents or general managers. The average domestic offer dropped from Rs 26.81 lakh annually last year to Rs 20.16 lakh this time.

The average overseas salary fell from $ 145,000 ( Rs 65.25 lakh) to $ 122,000 ( Rs 54.90 lakh). "The institute's placement service continues to provide full support to the five students in their career search efforts," said an IIM-A spokesperson.
