Banking is an industry with a variety of jobs for anyone interested in the field. You can work for a large commercial bank, a regional or local bank, a savings bank, a credit union or even an online bank. Follow these steps to familiarize yourself with the available jobs. A probationary officer (PO) is usually absorbed by a bank for the post of Assistant Manager (AM) and ranks in officer cadre of Scale - I.

  2. Help customers with their accounts as a customer service representative. You will open and close accounts and resolve customer complaints. Barclays bank moving 140 jobs to India

LONDON: Barclays, one of Britain's biggest banks, is reportedly moving 140 jobs out from Northampton, UK, to India.

This follows stricter banking regulations and heavier taxes promised by the previous Labour government — so far endorsed by the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition — in the aftermath of the global economic storm.

John Varley, Barclays chief executive, in an interview said London would be damaged by imposing taxes on the bank. Barclays already has expanding operations in India and has also launched a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) banking service outside India, including Britain.

Barclays, who weathered the international meltdown better than rivals like Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds, expects to considerably reduce outgoings. "Clearly there are some cost savings involved, but our main driving force is to create a global centre of excellence in India," Vikki Williams, head of Card Fraud Operations, was quoted as saying.

The unpleasant task of collecting dues will be increasingly carried out by determined call centre agents in India, who buzz customers in the UK incessantly demanding payments.

A new era starting for Staff Selection Commission (SSC)

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will be advertising the COMBINED GRADUATE LEVEL EXAMINATION, 2010 on 30th January 2010. This will mark the commencement of Examination Reforms in the Commission. For the first time, Staff Selection Commission will also be introducing ON-Line Application this examination with the facility of payment of application fee through State Bank Of India, either through Challan or on-line payment.

The Second administrative Reforms Commission (2nd ARC) has made extensive recommendations in its report on SSC’s selection process in order to enable it to complete the recruitment cycle within reasonable time. Its major recommendation was to have a single short listing examination for posts for which graduation is the minimum educational qualification, in order to obviate the need for holding multiple examinations. Extensive use of objective type testing was also recommended in order to cut down the delay in evaluation, to eliminate bias and to infuse further objectivity into the selection process. SSC constituted an Expert Group under the chairmanship of Director, Indian institute of Public Administration, with members drawn from IIT, Delhi, IIM, Ahmadabad, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, Mumbai, National Productivity Council, and private sector, with the approval of the Government of India, to consider the recommendations of the 2nd ARC and advise on various terms of reference relating to the entire gamut of selection processes adopted by SSC. Based on the advice of the Expert Group, SSC has initiated proposals for restructuring all its examinations. Government of India has accorded approval for SSC’s proposal for revising the scope, format and structure of Combined Graduate Level Examination.

The salient features of the Combined Graduate Level Examination, 2010 are:

i. The examination will substitute five earlier examinations- Combined Graduate Level Examination, Tax Assistant Examination, Sub Inspectors in Central Police Organizations Examination, Statistical Investigator   Gr II Examination, and Compilers in RGI Examination. Though it was originally proposed by SSC and also approved by the Government to include the posts of Section Officers (Audit and Commercial Audit) for offices under the C&AG and Section Officers (Accounts) for offices under Controller General Defence Accounts, consequent to up gradation of some of the posts to Group B-Gazetted level and pending decision of the Government on extending the scope of SSC’s work to include Gr B gazetted posts, these posts have been excluded from this examination.

ii. The written examination will be conducted in two tiers; the first tier utilized for short listing candidates for the second tier and will also have weightage in the final selection.

iii. Each candidate applying for multiple posts will need to submit only a single application with onetime payment of examination fee, relieving the candidates of the burden of submitting multiple applications with payment of fee with each application.

iv. Entire recruitment cycle is proposed to be completed in 11-12 months against almost two years at present for Combined Graduate Level Examination.

v. All papers will have only objective type multiple choice questions, amenable to machine scanning and quicker and more objective evaluation.

vi. Interview/Personality Test is prescribed only for posts for which interaction with the general public will be necessary immediately after entry into service.

vii. All India selection will be made for all the posts as at present.

The restructured Combined Graduate Level Examination is expected to benefit the Government, candidates and user Ministries/ Departments by way of faster completion of recruitment cycle, quicker selection and early placement. In order to equip itself for the restructured examination, SSC has conducted three Question Bank Projects at Bengaluru , Chennai and Mumbai during 2009-10 so far with the last in the series scheduled at Kolkata in February, 2010.

Proposals for restructuring of the Combined 10+2 Level Examination and Stenographers Examination have also been submitted by the SSC and are under active consideration of the Government.

How to Tackle Friends at Workplace

Courtesy: Economic Times

Mumbai Mirror

While having a pal at work boosts performance and fulfills your emotional needs, one needs to be cautious to distinguish between a ‘friend’ and an ‘affable coworker’. Being friends with deceitful colleagues can even cost you your job.

So, how can you keep an appropriate distance from your colleagues without coming across as callous? Here are some tips to help you manage friends at workplace and sustain positive friendships...

Set boundaries

No matter how ‘trustworthy’ you think your friends at work are, it is better to play safe when it comes to disclosing personal details or confidential business information. While it’s absolutely fine to hang out with your pals at work, share a drink or go out shopping, being too chummy with your colleagues can pose a serious threat to your job. Your reputation at work does matter. So, it’s best to keep a ‘professional distance’ with workplace friends.

Expert tip: Divya Joshi, an HR professional with a multi-national company in Delhi says, “Having a pal at work can be a boon if you strike a balance between work and friendship. But it can also create discrepancies if you are overtly friendly with your boss or vice versa. It is necessary to draw the line where necessary and separate professional commitments from personal relationships.”

While friends may serve as sounding boards and empathise with work related problems, it is vital to respect your friend’s privacy. It may be normal to give suggestions regarding work or personal life, but only as long as your friendship doesn’t affect your compatibility at work and interfere with your pal’s privacy. Learn to observe situations in which your opinion is welcome and stay mum when required.

Abhay Mishra, an IT professional agrees, “Yes, I think it’s very important to give each other space in a relationship. I had a friend in office who interfered with my work, giving suggestions even when it was not required. Although he did it in a good spirit with an intention to help me, it began to irk me after a couple of months and affected my friendship with him.”

Expert tip: Ruchika Shukla, counselor and relationship expert agrees, “One should be vigilant while choosing friends at work and be able to distinguish between friends and friendly coworkers. Trusting the wrong people can put your job at risk. What is most important is to be wary of making personal remarks at your peers or seniors.”
While friends at workplace may give a boost to your career, over indulging in socialising, especially during office hours may also land you in trouble. While it is a good idea to de-stress by catching up with your friends, do not let a brief chat turn into a never-ending conversation. It is preferable to keep such interactions post working hours.

Manoj Khandelwal, who works with a private bank in Gurgaon says, “I have many friends in office and we often hang out together. A few months ago, I released that spending too much time with them was hampering my work. So, I decided to set my priorities right and only meet them after working hours and keep our interaction at the workplace to a minimum. It’s been a smooth ride since then.”

Expert tip: “It is in your interest to stay away from excessive socialising during office hours. It is fine to take out time for a cup of coffee or chat during the lunch break, but one should take care not to hamper your work as a result of friendships at the workplace. Manage your time in a way so that you can have fun while fulfilling your professional responsibilities,” says Divya.

Jobs are back; upsurge in hiring as slump eases

Courtesy : Economic Times
NEW DELHI: Jobs are again back and India Inc is witnessing an upswing of 15 percent in hiring trend, kudos to the improving economic climate.
However, experts say it is too early to say that the situation has returned back to 'normalcy'.

"We see the movement happening across the sectors and it looks like worst is over. But the current scenario can not be considered as normal but it is better than bad,"  Executive search firm Global Hunt India professional leader Sunil Goel said.

If everything goes fine then it will take a year to reach to a normal situation, he added.

In last two quarter (January-March and April-June), hiring was almost 0-5 percent  across industries but in current quarter, average hiring has increased 5-15 percent across industries.
Sectors like tele com, infrastructure, life sciences and energy  have witnessed 25-30 per cent rise in hiring in the second quarter against the first quarter of this fiscal.

Meanwhile, IT, retail, banking, consulting, FMCG have seen 8-10 percent hiring in the September quarter compared to the previous quarter.

"With the economy showing signs of recovery, there is cautious optimism in the job market and going forward, the coming quarters are expected to be better," an industry expert said.

36 lakh for 11000 SBI Clerical Posts

Amazing again! Last time when 32 lakh people enrolled for 20000 SBI clerical posts, it made records in many aspects viz. Appointed Instructors, Test centers, awesome enrollments etc. etc. But this time again, It seems to be really a big rally going towards SBI or say banking system.
Whopping 36.11 lakh people have enrolled for SBI clerical. Previously it was thought to conduct exam in two phases but now SBI exam body Central Recruitment & Promotion Department (CRPD) have to conduct three phases of exam starting from November 8 then 15th & 22nd Nov. This way in each phase 12 lakh candidates would be examined. This is probably the first time for any nationalised or private bank in India. Final decision would take a week time or so.
A thing of great concern is also seen, most of the enrollment is done by post graduates and MBAs. One of the reason is recession and the other one is a hunt for a stable job whether it is of clerical cadre.
Banking industry is full of great opportunities these days. Every day one bank or another is coming with potential recruitment. In recent days ICICI, ING Vysya, Axis Bank etc. from the private sector and Corporation Bank, Vijaya Bank, State Bank of India (SBI) etc. from nationalized banks sector have sought staff for various posts.

India Inc hiring on all cylinders even in slump

Courtesy: Economic Times
NEW DELHI: In a year that saw the stock market crash and a serious liquidity crunch halt companies’ expansion plans globally, the number of
Indian companies that added new employees were 30% more than those that reduced manpower, according to an ET study.

The sample of 375 public listed companies of which employee data for the year ended March 2009 is available shows that three out of every five companies added people, led by top IT services firms and banks.

The robust domestic demand has been keeping Indian companies busy even as those dependent on exports such as the textile industry have seen mass retrenchment. As many as 200 companies ended the financial year with more staff as against 150 which saw a decline in the number of employees. The remaining firms maintained their workforce during the year.

The three largest IT firms—TCS, Wipro and Infy—have added more than 10,000 employees each while public sector banking giant SBI added 26,691 people last fiscal and as of March 31, 2009 had 2.05 lakh, maintaining its position as the largest corporate employer in the country. A large part of the new employees at SBI joined as clerical staff, with officers constituting around 11% of those who were recruited during the year.

SBI, the largest recruiter after IT firm TCS, was much more aggressive in hiring than Wipro and Infosys. Wipro and Infosys together added 28,049 employees, just about 5% more than SBI alone. Although SBI chairman OP Bhatt could not be contacted for comments for this story, he had earlier made a public statement that the bank is going to recruit 20,000 people this fiscal.

Dos and don'ts to enjoy your office party

Unless you are careful, office parties can turn you from 'hardworking and reliable' to 'flirtatious when drunk'. Here's how you can avoid the pitfalls.

Put on your dancing shoes and be there" is what the notice board says. Your otherwise hyperactive boss wants you to take it easy. And easy you take. You guzzle drums of beer, flirt with Ms Cute and curvy, bitch about the a** -licking colleague and show everyone how to master the Bidi jalaile moves. The next day the hangover is gone, but the grapevine is abuzz with your 'other' side. Plus, your boss isn't taking it easy at all. Follow these dos and don'ts to enjoy your office party, minus the regrets.

The environment maybe informal, but it's merely an extension of your office. Giving it a miss because being sober is not your idea of fun is a strict no-no. "The purpose of a party is to bring workers together and promote camaraderie. If you aren't interested, the least you can do is to show up for a few hours," says Pratibha Gosavi, director of Quorum HR.

Don't settle scores: So your rival colleague couldn't make it, but don't take that as an opportunity to make nasty remarks. "Firstly, it's not nice. Secondly, that person's friends might be present and the remarks would reach his/her ears," adds Gosavi. The word will surely get around, but more importantly, people will trust you less.

The food and booze is free, but it doesn’t mean you call in freeloaders. Unless the invite specifies, don't bring along dates. At most, it would be all right to bring a spouse or potential spouse to introduce to your colleagues. Bringing in friends defeats the purpose — socialising with your colleagues.

Drink if you want, but…

Have a drink or two, but know your limits. An informal setting doesn’t stop bosses and colleagues from judging you. Bar brawls and lip-locks is not a good agenda with people you will see on a daily basis.

"We often reveal things about ourselves that we ideally don't want our co-workers to know. So be on your toes," advises Gosavi. And remember, there will be photographs later.

This is your chance to small talk, even do a jig with the big boss without raising eyebrows. Get to know other people, especially from other departments who you don't get to speak to otherwise. They will know you better and inter-department work will become smoother.

Dress to party, not reveal: "No sloppy dress please," Gosavi warns. Yes, it's a party and you can add that extra bling, but anything suggestive or revealing will only attract unhealthy attention and be the fuel for next day's gossip machinery.

NEW DELHI: A recovery syndrome in employment generation has started resurfacing in the National Capital Region (NCR) during the first four months of

FY10, which witnessed a 17.1 per cent surge in jobs creation as compared to the last four months of FY 09, according to Assocham Placement Pattern.

The APP Study titled Job opportunities

in the National Capital' concludes that between April and July 2009, 49,750 openings were created at different levels in the entire NCR, comprising Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad as compared to 42,501 openings between December and March '08-09.

With an improving scenario in the job creation process for the capital city, the overall situation in the employment sector is picking up as the signs of economic downturn diminish significantly, said Rawat.

Reversing the trend in the composition of new job creation process, the satellite towns of the NCR region has outpaced the Delhi region by contributing 53.6 per cent towards the new job openings in the Delhi NCR region since the beginning of the current fiscal (April – July 2009). During the last four months of the previous fiscal FY09, the satellite towns of the NCR region were lagging behind the Delhi region with a share of 42 per cent in the total number of new job openings in the Delhi NCR region.

However, the total number of newly-created jobs in the Delhi NCR region as a whole increased from 42,501 during December–March 2008-09 to 49,750 during April–July 2009, a growth of over 17 per cent.

In terms of area-wise job creation in the satellite towns of the NCR region, Gurgaon created the maximum new job opportunities with 23.1 per cent share in total Delhi NCR followed by Noida/Greater Noida (20 per cent), Ghaziabad (5.6 per cent) and Faridabad (4.9 per cent).

As the Commonwealth Games are fast approaching its schedule to kick off, the growth in the number of new job vacancies augurs well for employment prospects in the capital city. "Jobs in construction, hospitality and infrastructure sector would increase tremendously as we progress towards the commencement of the Commonwealth Games 2010," the study says.
